Red and black is the oldest pairing in Persian carpet weaving, the colour set that turns up on the earliest fragments at the Pazyryk burials and runs unbroken through the tribal looms of the Caucasus into the urban workshops of the nineteenth century. The combination works because madder red carries warmth that black absorbs and re-emits as depth rather than weight. The pattern in front of you sits inside that long inheritance, drawn by a contemporary master who studied classical herati and boteh repeats before composing this field.

Three weavers shared the loom for roughly six months in India, working a Persian-style asymmetric knot through a cotton warp and weft. The pile is hand-spun wool, lanolin-rich, drawn into a 10 mm cut that holds the saturation of the red without flattening under traffic. Around 2.6 million knots were tied row by row against a vertical beam, each one set by feel against the last.

The composition

A deep madder red field runs corner to corner, broken by a black central medallion that anchors the eye without dominating it. Vinework in soft ivory tendrils spreads outward, the way garden frescoes are organised in seventeenth-century miniatures. The border is a single wide black band carrying paired palmettes in faded ochre. The red will lighten over the next fifteen years into a clearer carmine. The black settles into the wool rather than fading.

What you are buying

Persian red-ground carpets of comparable density and palette from the late nineteenth century clear London and continental rooms in the range of twenty to forty thousand pounds when they appear with sound foundations. This is a new weaving in the same lineage, on the same loom geometry, in fibre cleaned and spun by hand. The piece appreciates as the dyes mellow and the wool develops a low sheen the loom cannot give it.

The piece in a room

9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) is the canonical drawing-room scale. Place it under a ten-seat dining table or beneath a deep three-seat sofa with flanking armchairs. The red holds firmest against ivory or stone walls. Brass and dark walnut wake against the field; the black border draws charcoal upholstery into conversation with it.

Conservation

Rotate one hundred and eighty degrees every six months so light and traffic redistribute across the field. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth pressed downward, never rubbed sideways. Schedule a hand wash with a wool-trained conservator every five to seven years. Cared for this way, the rug is a sixty-year object that outlives most household furniture around it.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
