An oriental rug at primary-room scale is a piece of architecture as much as a piece of textile. The pattern, the border, the medallion, and the field all work together to give the room its centre and its proportions. The traditional purple register in this piece draws on the colour vocabulary of court weaving, where deep saturations against ivory or gold accents were used to mark formal rooms. The contemporary version softens that register without losing its presence.

The piece was hand-knotted in India over close to six months by two to three weavers. Wool pile worked over a cotton foundation, every knot tied by hand using the asymmetric loop. The purple was achieved through a careful multi-bath dye process, with the deepest saturation reserved for the central medallion and the field reading at slightly lower intensity. A final wet wash and hand-shear settled the pile to a uniform plane.

The composition

A purple ground that reads aubergine in low light and pulls toward plum under daylight. A central medallion in deeper saturation anchors the field. Floral and vine work in ivory, soft rust, and pale gold runs through the body of the rug, with the border picking up the same secondary colours in a measured rhythm. The composition is restrained for an oriental piece, which is part of what makes it work in contemporary rooms rather than reading period.

What you are buying

6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) hand-knotted oriental in wool at this density and dye complexity is six months of skilled hand labour. The MSRP of just over a lac reflects the actual build cost. The clearance figure here returns the buyer significant equivalent value against Western dealer inventory of the same lineage and density. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating; the colour deepens with foot traffic and ambient light.

The piece in a room

6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) is the working scale for a primary bedroom under a queen bed, a small living room with a two-seat sofa, or a study with two leather chairs. The purple at this saturation needs restrained walls; pale plaster, off-white, deep navy, and warm grey all hold it. The ivory and gold accents pair cleanly with walnut joinery, with brass fittings, and with linen upholstery.

Conservation

Wool at this density rewards consistent care. Vacuum weekly on suction only with the beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with a clean white cotton cloth and cool water, working from the edge of the spill toward the centre. The dye is colourfast under normal conditions. Professional hand-clean by a wool conservator every five years. Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
