Rugsville Traditional Wool Light Gold Carpet 8' x 10'

The traditional Persian carpet vocabulary arrived in India through centuries of court patronage, and the workshops that produce this light gold ground today are working from cartoons that descend in a direct line from those originals. The palette is calibrated for a drawing room rather than a museum, the gold softened by oxidation rather than gilded, the floral repeats opened out so the field carries weight on its own.

This rug took three weavers nearly five months at the loom. Hand-spun wool was dyed in small lots over copper, then knotted onto a cotton warp at a density of roughly 150 knots per square inch. The pile is left at around ten millimetres so the design reads cleanly without losing the soft hand of well-washed wool.

The composition

A field of warm light gold carrying floral medallions and arabesques in deeper russet, ivory, and a quiet indigo guard. The gold is the work. It moves under daylight and pulls amber under lamplight, and the secondary colours sit inside it without competing for attention. Over a decade of use the gold will lighten by a value as the wool oxidises, and the indigo will deepen, both shifts adding rather than subtracting.

A new Persian-tradition rug at this scale and density on hand-spun wool would price at three to four lakh through a Western retailer. Antique examples of the same family in fair condition trade well above that at international auction. The piece appreciates with use rather than depreciating, and that is a property no other domestic object on the floor can claim.

The piece in a room

8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) is the working scale for a formal sitting room or a dining area set with eight chairs. The light gold ground holds its own against cream limewashed walls and reads softly against panelled joinery in oak or teak. Pair with mid-century walnut, with brass lighting, with art that uses warm earth tones rather than cool blues.

Conservation

Vacuum once a week with suction only. Rotate end to end each spring and autumn. Lift spills with a clean cotton cloth pressed gently against the pile, never rubbed. A wool-trained conservator should hand-wash the rug every five years. Treated this way the carpet runs eighty years and outlives most of the furniture above it.
