The square format is the rarest geometry in the Persian carpet tradition. A weaver who sets up a 9-foot-square loom is committing to a composition where there is no long axis to lead the eye and no short axis to anchor it. Everything has to resolve outward from the centre. The classical workshops of central Persia handled this by working a single dominant medallion against a quiet ground, a logic this rug carries forward in light brown and pale gold.
Two to three weavers shared the loom across roughly six months. Each row of Persian asymmetric knots was tied against a vertical beam, then beaten down with a steel comb before the next row began. The wool is highland fleece, hand carded and hand spun so the yarn carries the slight irregularity that distinguishes a hand-knotted carpet from a machine alternative. The natural lanolin in the fibre means the pile sheds dust and resists soiling without chemical treatment.
The composition
A central medallion in light gold floats on a pale brown field. Vine work travels corner to corner with the kind of unhurried rhythm only a hand-drawn cartoon produces. The border is a single tonal band, no busy guards, no competing colour. As the rug ages the gold will deepen toward honey and the brown will lift toward biscuit. The colour is not finished on delivery. It matures into its final palette across the first decade of use.
What you are buying
A genuinely square 9 x 9 hand-knotted Persian-pattern wool carpet is a search-and-wait object even at the auction houses. New weavings to this scale and density list with dealers in the 3 to 5 lac range when they appear. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating. Foot traffic burnishes the wool, light deepens the dye, and the pile becomes more lustrous as the fibres compress. It is one of the very few objects in a home that becomes more valuable through living with it.
The piece in a room
9' Square (274 x 274 cm) is the answer to a square sitting room or a meditation pavilion where a rectangular rug would feel awkward. Centre it under a four-arm seating arrangement with the medallion clear of furniture, or float it under a round dining table with the chairs on the field. The light brown holds against off-white plaster and against terracotta or sandstone floors equally well.
Conservation
Rotate a quarter turn each spring and autumn so the corners wear at the same rate as the centre. Vacuum weekly on suction only, beater bar disengaged. Blot any spill with cotton, never rub. A wool-trained hand wash every five years lifts embedded dust and restores the lanolin sheen. Cared for this way the rug runs eighty years and stays in the family.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
