Ivory and rust together is one of the durable colour conversations of Indian classical weaving. Ivory carries the chromatic light, rust carries the floral incident; the contrast is gentle enough to live with for decades and saturated enough to organise the room it sits in. The Indian classical tradition runs the rust at the madder end of the spectrum rather than the orange end, which is why the colour does not date.
Three weavers worked five to six months on this 8 by 10 ft (244 by 305 cm) hand-knotted piece on a vertical loom in India. The asymmetric Persian knot was used throughout, tied by hand into a cotton warp with hand-spun wool. The pile was sheared low so the floral palmette and vine work hold their drawing under traffic. Total labour runs to about sixteen weaver-months. The dyeing of madder rust requires multiple immersions to build the saturation depth that single-bath dyeing cannot achieve.
The composition
An ivory field carrying breathing space and chromatic light. Rust palmette and vine work running through the field at calculated intervals, with the central medallion drawn in deeper rust and the corner devices echoing it. The border carries a single guard band of rust with ivory accents. The drawing is generous and unhurried; the eye finds rest between motifs.
What you are buying
Hand-knotted traditional Indian carpets at this scale and density at international gallery dealers list at $4,500 to $11,000. The Rs 1.69 lac MSRP places this rug at fair gallery parity. The Rs 71,799 working price represents an entry point into the gallery market without compromise on construction. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating, which is the long-term argument for hand-knotting at any price.
The piece in a room
8 by 10 ft (244 by 305 cm) anchors a primary bedroom with a king bed, a medium living area with a three-seater and two armchairs, or an eight-seater dining setup. Pair with brass, walnut, leather, plaster walls in lime or putty, and warm linen. The rust ground argues against cool grey walls, which pull the colour toward orange and break the temperature balance.
Conservation
Quarter-turn each season for even ageing. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with cotton, never rub. Conservator hand-wash every five years. With this regime the piece runs eighty years of working life. Direct sunlight in moderation deepens madder rather than fading it.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
