Traditional Persian carpet weaving in ivory and red is one of the oldest two-colour conversations in the textile world. The ivory carries the drawing, the red carries the weight, and the eye reads the design as figure against ground rather than as a busy field. Court workshops of the Safavid period set the template, and country weavers across the wider Persian sphere have refined it for four centuries since.
This carpet was hand-knotted in India by a team of three weavers who shared the loom for roughly six months. The pile is hand-spun wool drawn from highland fleece, plied for tensile strength, and dyed in small batches to keep the reds within a controlled range. Each knot was tied by feel against a vertical beam, finished with a careful clipping pass that brought the medallion drawing forward by a sliver of pile height.
The composition
An ivory ground holds a central red medallion with serrated leaves and curling vine work running into the corners. The red is layered, not flat, with garnet at the centre and a softer brick at the edges where the dye sat lightest. Pendant motifs at top and bottom echo the medallion in miniature. Over years of use the ivory will warm into bone and the red will deepen toward oxblood, the way old Persian rugs settle into themselves.
What you are buying
Antique Persian carpets in this drawing and condition routinely sell at international auctions for two to four times the price asked here. This is a new weaving in the same vocabulary, on the same kind of loom, in the same fibre, by hands that have inherited the technique without interruption. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating. It is one of very few household objects of which that is true.
The piece in a room
8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) is the working scale for a primary living room with a three-seater sofa and a pair of chairs, or a six-to-eight seat dining configuration. The ivory ground throws light back into the room, which suits darker walls and walnut joinery. Pair with restrained upholstery in linen or unbleached cotton so the carpet remains the graphic event in the composition.
Conservation
Rotate end for end every six months so footfall and daylight age the pile evenly. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged, suction only. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth, never rub. A wool-trained conservator should hand-wash the carpet roughly every five to seven years. Treated this way, the rug runs eighty years and becomes a piece an heir wants to keep.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
