Tone-on-tone weaving is the highest test of a workshop. With colour stripped out as a variable, every irregularity in spinning, dyeing, or knotting becomes visible. The Mughal court ateliers at Lahore produced ivory-on-ivory carpets in the seventeenth century that are now among the most contested lots at any sale of Indian textile art, precisely because so few survived and so few were attempted. The composition in front of you sits in that thin tradition.

Three to four weavers shared the loom for around seven months in India, the additional time accounting for the discipline the field demands. The wool is hand-carded and spun into two slightly different weights, one for the field and one for the embossed pattern, so the relief catches light without contrast in colour. Around 2.6 million knots were tied through cotton warp. The dye bath was a single light pearl wash with a faint warm undertone from walnut hull.

The composition

The whole rug works in a single ivory register. A central medallion is drawn entirely through pile relief and knot direction, visible only as light moves across the surface. The border carries the same medallion logic, a quiet outline rather than a contrasting band. From across the room it reads as a textured field. From close up the architecture emerges. The rug brightens against natural light and softens under lamps.

What you are buying

Single-tone Mughal-tradition carpets at this scale almost never come to the open market. When they do, they clear the major rooms in the range of forty to eighty thousand US dollars. This is a contemporary weaving in the same discipline, on cotton foundation, in hand-spun wool. The piece appreciates as the wool develops the low sheen that only walking and time produce, and as collectors thin out from the category.

The piece in a room

9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) is the scale at which the tonal field begins to do its real work. Place the rug under a ten-seat table or beneath a long sectional. Pair with off-white plaster or pale stone walls; saturated walls reduce the rug to texture. Bronze, antique brass, smoked oak, and unbleached linen all sit naturally with the ivory field. Avoid placing strongly patterned upholstery directly above it.

Conservation

Rotate one hundred and eighty degrees every six months. Vacuum weekly, suction only. Address spills immediately on an ivory rug; the small window between blot and stain is the difference between conservation and restoration. Schedule a wash with a conservator every three to five years rather than the standard five to seven. Cared for this way the rug runs a century.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
