An ivory ground rug is the hardest thing to pull off in the Persian-tradition vocabulary. The field has nowhere to hide, every knot reads, and the design carries the entire visual weight of the piece. Indian workshops working in this idiom usually reserve ivory for their best wool and most patient hands, because the rug telegraphs every shortcut otherwise.
Three weavers shared the upright loom for around five months. The pile is hand-spun wool from highland sheep, left undyed for the field and dyed in small lots for the floral repeats. Roughly 1.4 million Persian-asymmetric knots were tied by feel against a cotton warp, then sheared by hand to ten millimetres so the ivory holds its surface evenly under daylight.
The composition
A clean ivory field carrying tonal floral arabesques in faded madder, soft indigo, and walnut brown. The figure is restrained. Nothing crowds the centre. The eye is allowed to settle into the wool rather than chase the pattern. Ivory does not stay static. The wool will warm into bone over the first five years and the dyed accents will deepen, both adjustments that pull the rug toward the patina collectors look for.
What you are buying
A hand-knotted ivory wool carpet of this size and density retails through European and American dealers at three to four lakh. The reason the price is what it is here is the workshop ships direct. The rug is an asset that appreciates with use rather than depreciating. Few household objects are.
The piece in a room
8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) anchors a formal drawing room or a primary bedroom. The ivory ground prefers natural light. It works against pale plaster walls, against limewashed grey, and against soft pink. Walnut and oak floors both ground it. The rug pairs with linen upholstery, with bleached wood furniture, and with art that uses earth tones rather than cool primaries.
Conservation
Suction vacuum every week. Rotate the rug end to end each spring and autumn. Blot spills immediately with a clean white cotton cloth from the edge inward. Avoid placing the rug under direct south-facing sunlight for more than four hours a day. A wool-trained conservator should hand-wash the piece every four to five years. The ivory will outlast its first owners on this care.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
