The all-over ivory carpet is the quietest thing the Persian tradition gave the modern house. Stripped of its central medallion and reduced to a near-monochrome field of curling vine, it became the carpet that interior architects of the twentieth century reached for when a room had to hold serious furniture without becoming an exhibition of its own pattern. The drawing in this piece descends from that lineage and keeps the restraint that made it useful.

Three to four weavers shared a single horizontal loom for roughly six months in India to bring this rug off the beam. The foundation is a tight cotton warp and weft, the pile is hand-spun wool, and the dyeing was done in small lots so the ivory carries the gentle tonal drift that an industrial wash cannot replicate. After the cut, the rug was washed, sun-dried on grass, and finally sheared by hand to even the surface.

The composition

A near-monochromatic field of cream and bone, with arabesque vine work picked out a half-tone darker so the design reads only at close range. Faint warm undertones move through the field where the wool drank dye unevenly. The border is single-line and slim. From a standing height the rug behaves as a textured ground; from kneeling it reveals the floral rhythm that took months to draw.

What you are buying

An all-over hand-knotted Indian wool carpet at this size, in true ivory rather than a printed cream, occupies a price tier where Western retail tends to start at three to five times this figure. The work is loom-time and fibre, both of which Rugsville sources without intermediaries. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating, the wool burnishes underfoot, and the design only grows more confident as the pile compacts.

The piece in a room

9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) is a drawing-room scale that holds a long sectional, a low coffee table, and a pair of armchairs without any furniture leg falling off the edge. Ivory ground reads beautifully against dark walnut floors and stone-toned walls; against pale oak it dissolves the floor plane and pushes upholstery forward as the visual centre. Layer art with restraint; the rug is already the field.

Conservation

Vacuum gently with a brushless head once a week. Rotate twice a year so traffic patterns and natural light age the pile evenly. Blot spills immediately with cool water and a clean cotton cloth. Plan a professional wool wash every five years to lift embedded soil that vacuuming cannot reach. Stored correctly, the rug will outlast its first decade of service.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
