Ivory and black reads as a modernist pairing today, but it traces back through the Anatolian kilim tradition to the very earliest carpet fragments at Catalhoyuk, where ivory undyed wool was used as the field for stamped black geometry. The contrast carries authority because there is no third tone to soften the line. The pattern in front of you takes that discipline and translates it into a Persian-style knotted field, drawn by a contemporary master who studied early Caucasian and central-Asian work.
About 2.6 million Persian asymmetric knots, tied through a cotton warp by three weavers over roughly six months in India. The pile is hand-carded wool, slightly under-spun so the ivory keeps a quiet halo of irregularity rather than reading machine-flat. The black yarn is dyed in iron-mordant baths to a deep matte finish, then washed twice to lift any residual saltiness in the dye. Total surface area: 12,635 square inches.
The composition
A clean ivory ground holds a black central medallion drawn in straight architectural lines rather than curving floral arabesque. Spandrels in matching black anchor the corners. The border is a single black guard band, narrow, and a wider field band of paired ivory rosettes on black. The whole composition reads as confident architecture from a distance and rewards close inspection with the small variations only hand-knotting produces.
What you are buying
Hand-knotted carpets at this scale and density in two-colour graphic fields are uncommon at any price point because the discipline of weaving them well is rare. Comparable contemporary work from European designer studios commissions out at three to five times this figure. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating; the ivory wool develops a low patina that brightens the contrast over the first decade.
The piece in a room
9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) holds a long sofa with chairs at either end or sits beneath a dining table for ten. The ivory and black field accepts every other colour you put in the room. It pairs with mid-century walnut and tubular steel, with deep oxblood Chesterfield leather, with travertine and with raw plaster. White walls open the field; charcoal walls let the rug read as a graphic statement on the floor.
Conservation
Rotate the rug one hundred and eighty degrees twice yearly. Vacuum with suction only, beater bar disengaged. Blot spills immediately with clean cotton, never rub. Address any black-on-ivory dye migration with a professional conservator within a week of any wet incident. Hand wash every five to seven years by a trained workshop. The rug runs three generations cared for this way.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
