Traditional carpet weaving in India developed over centuries through a slow exchange between Mughal court workshops, regional tribal looms, and the export trade with Europe. The vocabulary that resulted, palmette borders, cypress motifs, central medallions, vine fields, runs across nearly every classical tradition the subcontinent has produced. The piece in front of you draws on that vocabulary in an ivory and gold register chosen for contemporary primary rooms.
Three to four weavers shared the loom in India for close to nine months on this piece. Wool pile worked over a cotton foundation, every knot tied by hand using the asymmetric loop. The wool was sourced for long staple and capacity to hold the soft gold tone without flattening. The dye work used a combination of plant-derived and low-intensity chemical baths to achieve the controlled gradient between the ivory ground and the gold floral elements.
The composition
An ivory ground that reads cream from across a large room and resolves into bone, oat, and warm white up close. Gold floral and vine work runs corner to corner with a central medallion in slightly deeper amber. The border carries the same gold tone with a subtle inner guard band in pale taupe. The whole composition is restrained; the gold accents register without dominating the ivory field, which is part of why the rug reads as architecture rather than as decoration.
What you are buying
9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) hand-knotted in wool at this density represents the largest commitment of weaver-time in this batch. The MSRP of nearly four lac reflects the build cost; the clearance figure here returns the buyer multiples in equivalent value. Comparable Western inventory in this scale and tradition runs significantly higher. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating, and the ivory deepens into bone over the next decade as natural light works on the wool.
The piece in a room
9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) is the canonical primary drawing-room scale. The rug expects a ten- or twelve-seat dining table or a full sectional arrangement above it, sitting as the work the room is composed around. Mid-tone walls hold the ivory; direct sunlight is welcome, as it slowly ages the wool into the warmer tones the design anticipates. Pairs cleanly with walnut joinery, with brass, and with deep upholstery.
Conservation
Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn so light and traffic age the rug evenly. Vacuum weekly on suction only, beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth and cool water, never rub. Hand-wash by a wool-trained conservator every five years. With this care the rug runs eighty to a hundred years and outlives its first owner.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
