Rugsville Oushak Green & Light Gold Wool Carpet 9' x 12'

The Oushak tradition emerged from the Anatolian carpet schools and built its reputation on open fields, restrained palettes, and large-scale floral or medallion work that read as architectural rather than ornamental. American collectors of the late 19th and early 20th century established Oushak as the carpet of the comfortable interior, where a single quiet ground could anchor a room without forcing the rest of the furnishing to compete. Indian workshops have continued the tradition with their own colour vocabulary, including the soft greens and golds of this piece.

Four weavers worked the loom in India for around six months. Hand-spun wool pile, asymmetric knots tied to a cotton foundation, the design plotted on a cartoon and read row by row at the beam. The green and gold palette comes from controlled dye baths rather than over-dyeing, which gives the field a stable reading without the mottling lower-grade pieces show. The Oushak character depends on the open field rather than dense ornament, which means the weaver discipline is in maintaining even pile across long stretches of single colour.

The composition

A soft green field with a gold central medallion and gold incident through the corners. The border is green on green with gold guard bands, restrained in the Oushak manner so the framing reads as architecture rather than as pattern. The green carries a faint olive cast that pairs comfortably with warm wood floors, while the gold lifts forward under directional light. The colour will warm slightly over time as the wool oxidises.

A new weaving in the same tradition, on the same kind of vertical loom, in the same hand-spun wool, sits at ₹1.27 lac because the auction and dealer infrastructure costs are removed. Conservation

Half-turn rotation twice a year. Vacuum weekly on suction only, beater bar lifted. Blot spills with cotton, never rub. Hand-wash by a trained conservator every five to seven years. The carpet runs sixty to eighty years with this care.
