Gold-on-ivory is the inverse partnership to the more familiar ivory-on-rust, and it works through a different visual mechanic. Where rust on ivory carries the field through warmth and contrast, gold on ivory works through tonal proximity, with the gold lifting just enough above the cream ground to read as ornament rather than disappearing into the surface. The Persian and Mughal courts both worked this register for ceremonial and domestic carpets, and Indian workshops have carried the vocabulary forward into contemporary production.
Four weavers worked the loom in India for around six months on this piece. The pile is hand-spun wool, asymmetric knots tied row by row against a vertical beam, on a cotton foundation. The gold passages were dyed before the cream wool was knotted around them, the standard sequence for tonal compositions where the contrast depends on dye saturation rather than knot density. The pile is even at 10 mm across the surface, the conventional finish for a traditional drawing-room carpet at this scale.
The composition
A cream ground with gold floral and arabesque work tracing across the field. A central medallion anchors the composition with deeper gold and cream highlights; corner spandrels echo the medallion at smaller scale. The border carries a gold framing band with cream guard lines on either side. The composition reads as luminous rather than declarative, with the gold catching directional light and softening under diffuse light. Over time the cream warms toward a richer ivory.
What you are buying
Equivalent traditional hand-knotted carpets at this scale carry MSRP near ₹3 lac in conventional retail. The listing at ₹1.27 lac is closer to workshop-direct economics. A traditional wool carpet of this construction appreciates with use rather than depreciating, which separates it from any other large furnishing decision. The price reflects the weaver-months invested in a piece that runs decades.
The piece in a room
9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) anchors a primary drawing room or a formal dining room. The gold and ivory pair with cream or warm white walls, oak or walnut floors, antique brass, gilt frames, and traditional upholstery. The carpet expects a long sofa or a ten-seat dining table above it. Pairs poorly with strongly cool palettes; the warm tonal register requires warm partners.
Conservation
Rotate every six months. Vacuum weekly on suction only, beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with absorbent cotton; never rub a wool carpet at this density. Hand-wash by a trained conservator every five to seven years. With this care the carpet runs sixty to eighty years and outlives its first owners.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
