The Persian motif survives because it does its work without insisting. A composition that lays a quiet order across the floor and lets the room speak above it. The same logic underpins much of the architectural ornament you encounter without naming, the cast-iron screens and the tile work and the painted ceilings that hold a room without claiming it.

The rug was hand-tufted over about four weeks by two tufters and a finisher. Wool was pushed through stretched cotton canvas one row at a time with a tufting tool, then sealed at the back with natural latex and a cotton scrim. The final pass was hand shearing to bring the Persian drawing into relief above the cream field.

The composition

The composition uses cream as its base note, with the Persian motif articulated in shifts of density rather than sharp colour contrasts. At distance the rug reads as a single tone; on approach the pattern resolves. That two-distance behaviour is why the design holds in rooms of different scales. The drawing has been calibrated to work both as floor furniture seen from the sofa and as graphic ground seen from the doorway.

The piece in a room

A 5' x 8' (152 × 244 cm) rug works as the centre of a small living grouping, under a queen bed, or in a dining nook for four to six. The cream palette gives the room its ground without claiming the focal position. The rug behaves as the architectural plane the furniture floats on, which is the proper job of a rug at this scale; the eye should land on the seating or the art, not on the floor itself.

Care

Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Every tufted rug loses fibre to a beater bar regardless of its price. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth, never scrub. Expect light shedding for the first six weeks as loose fibres work themselves out of the pile. Professional dry clean every three years. The latex backing has a service life of fifteen to twenty years; expect to recondition or replace at that point if the surface is still in good order.
