When the camel takes the field and ivory occupies the motifs, the rug is read warmer and more grounded than its inverse. The shift in ratio is small on paper but considerable in a room. The ground colour is what the eye sees first, and a camel-led field gives a drawing room a base note rather than a treble one. Village looms in central Iran developed this convention over centuries, and the better Indian houses preserved it long after most catalogue producers moved to ivory grounds.

Three to four weavers shared a single loom for around six months in India to complete this rug. Foundation is cotton, pile is hand-spun wool, and the camel hue is the natural pigment of the source flock rather than a dyed approximation. Ivory accents were either left undyed in their cleaner form or lightened in mild lime baths. After the cut, the rug was washed clean, dried on grass, and sheared by hand to even the surface and bring the design relief into focus.

The composition

A warm camel ground holding around three-quarters of the field, ivory vine work and floral medallions threaded through the rest, soft accents of pale walnut along the border. The colour temperature is consistently warm; there is no cool counterweight in the palette. From standing height the carpet behaves as a textural ground with subtle ornament; on approach the floral drawing emerges and rewards close looking.

What you are buying

The combination of nine-by-twelve scale, hand-knotted construction, and naturally undyed camel wool puts this rug in a market segment where Western retail typically opens at five lakh and clears eight in the gallery world. Rugsville's pricing reflects loom-direct sourcing without an importer's margin layered on. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating, the wool burnishes with foot traffic, and the patina deepens over decades.

The piece in a room

9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) is right for a primary drawing room, a substantial bedroom, or a long dining setting. The camel ground works against off-white plaster, lime wash, and natural stone walls. It pairs cleanly with woods in the walnut and teak families; against pale oak it reads as the warmest plane in the room. Avoid grey upholstery in this scenario; the rug expects warmth around it.

Conservation

Rotate twice a year to even out fade and traffic patterns. Vacuum once a week with suction only, beater bar off. Treat any spill with cool water and a soft cotton cloth, blotting outward to inward. Plan a hand wash every five to six years by a wool-trained conservator; never dry-clean a hand-knotted wool carpet, as solvents strip the lanolin that gives the fibre its lustre.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
