Indigo blue paired with madder red is the deepest, most architectural colour set in the Persian classical tradition. It belongs to the great seventeenth-century carpets of the Safavid court ateliers, and to the Bidjar and Ferahan workshops that worked through the nineteenth century. The two colours hold each other in tension because indigo is a cold absorbent dye and madder is a warm reflective one, and the eye reads the surface as deeper than it is. This rug works inside that tradition.
Three weavers shared the loom for around six months in India. The structure is a Persian asymmetric knot tied through cotton warp and weft, about 2.6 million knots in total. Wool was hand-carded and spun, then dyed in deep indigo vats by a master who keeps the fermentation alive across multiple weeks. The madder ground was prepared separately, matured to a dense red with a slight orange undertone, and laid against the indigo border without intermediary tones.
The composition
A red field carries a central indigo medallion drawn in the architectural style of seventeenth-century court work. Spandrels in indigo anchor the corners. The border is a wide indigo band carrying paired floral palmettes in cream and madder. There is no third primary colour; the entire rug runs on the contrast between blue and red, with cream used only as a small linear element. The composition deepens as the eye stays on it.
What you are buying
Court-style indigo and red carpets at this scale and density move through international rooms in the range of twenty-five to fifty thousand US dollars when sound antique examples surface. This is a new weaving in the same tradition, on cotton foundation, in vegetable-dyed hand-spun wool. The rug functions as a working object on a floor and as an asset that gains rather than loses value as the indigo settles into its mature register.
The piece in a room
9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) is the scale at which a full court-style composition reads correctly. Place it under a ten-seat dining table or beneath a deep sofa with flanking chairs. The blue and red wake against pale walls and recede into authority against deep walls. Avoid placing strongly patterned upholstery directly above it; the rug expects to be the principal pattern in the room.
Conservation
Rotate twice a year. Vacuum weekly, suction only, beater bar disengaged. Indigo can carry slight residual dye in the first year of use; blot any moisture immediately and address any migration with a conservator within days. Plan a professional hand wash every five to seven years. The rug runs eighty to a hundred years cared for this way.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
