A black ground with a light gold pattern reverses the usual logic of the Persian carpet, where the field is light and the figure dark. Reversing it produces a different kind of object. The gold becomes the figure that reads from across the room, and the black settles the rug into the architecture rather than competing with it. The cartoon for this piece is contemporary Indian, working in dialogue with a long Persian tradition.
Three weavers spent close to five months at the loom. The wool is hand-spun, the black drawn from oak gall and iron, the gold from weld and pomegranate matured for two weeks in copper. Roughly 1.4 million asymmetric knots were tied and beaten against a cotton warp, then sheared by hand to a uniform ten millimetre pile.
The composition
Black field. Light gold central medallion and corner spandrels. A single guard band in faded ochre that rests the eye between the field and the room. Vegetable dye produces a slight irregularity in both colours, and that irregularity is the proof of the dye lot. Over the first decade the black will pull toward iron blue and the gold will lighten by a value, both shifts welcome.
What you are buying
Equivalent hand-knotted wool rugs in this construction are sold in Europe and the United States at three to four lakh. The piece appreciates with use rather than depreciating. There is no other domestic object that does that at any price, and certainly none that does it on the floor.
The piece in a room
8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) suits a primary living room with a dark walnut floor or a formal study lined with bookshelves. The black ground holds its own against deep panelling and reads dramatically against white plaster. The gold figure picks up brass lighting and tobacco-coloured leather upholstery. The rug expects relatively few competing patterns in the room.
Conservation
Suction vacuum weekly. Rotate end to end each spring and autumn. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth, never a coloured one. A specialist hand-wash every five years restores lanolin and removes the dust the suction cannot reach. The carpet runs three generations on this care.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
