Black and ivory is the most disciplined colour pair in the Persian carpet vocabulary. There is no warm tone to soften the contrast, no second value to ease the eye between fields. The composition either holds or it does not. The Traditional Persian weavers worked the pair into floral medallion designs because the high contrast made every line of the drawing legible, and that legibility is what makes the pattern read at room scale rather than dissolving into noise.
Six months of loom time, three to four weavers leaning into a vertical beam in turn. The pile is hand-spun New Zealand wool laid on cotton warp, tied in Persian asymmetric knots row by row. The black was built from layered indigo and walnut, the way museum-quality plant dye is engineered to read true black rather than the blue-black or brown-black that single dye lots produce. The ivory is undyed wool, sun-bleached for four days. After clipping the rug saw a long mineral wash to mellow the contrast slightly so the pattern reads as composed rather than as printed.
The composition
An ivory ground carrying a black medallion at the centre and dense floral tracery throughout the field. The drawing is in fine line rather than mass, with palmette, vine, and rosette working as a continuous traced design. The border is a triple band held in the same restricted palette so it frames without competing. The contrast holds. Over the first decade the black will lift a quarter shade toward charcoal and the ivory will warm toward bone, the slow easing of the relationship that defines vegetable-dyed work.
What you are buying
Antique Traditional Persian carpets in this disciplined palette reach twenty-five to fifty-five thousand US dollars at international auction when condition matches. This rug shares the loom architecture, the fibre, the Persian knot, and the plant-dye discipline. At one and a half lac it sits below the auction comparable and appreciates with use rather than depreciating.
The piece in a room
9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) is the canonical drawing-room scale. The high-contrast composition pairs with chalk plaster, washed oak, brushed brass, and a single large work in saturated colour. The pattern reads at distance and resolves on approach. Modern interiors with strict line work hold the rug particularly well.
Conservation
Half-turn the rug each spring and autumn. Vacuum weekly, suction only, beater bar off. Blot spills at once with clean cotton. Hand-wash by a trained wool conservator every six years. With this care the rug crosses a century.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
