Rugsville Traditional Wool Black Carpet 8' x 10'

Persian wool weaving in the traditional vocabulary has been a continuous practice for nearly five centuries. The drawing combines a central medallion, corner spandrels, vining palmette infill, and a layered border, all arranged by the head weaver from a coloured study rather than from a printed cartoon. A black-ground traditional weaving is uncommon. Black takes a tannin-rich overdye to achieve, the contrast against the ivory drawing is unusually high, and the field rewards a confident hand. The pattern in this rug works in that lineage.

Three weavers shared a vertical loom for about five months. The pile is hand-spun wool on a cotton warp, knotted by hand row by row using the Persian asymmetric knot. The black ground is achieved by overdyeing brown wool with an oak-gall and iron-rich tannin bath, which produces a slightly warm black rather than the dead flat black of synthetic dyes. The ivory medallion and corner spandrels use undyed wool blended from two fleece batches. The accent tones are vegetable: madder for the rust notes, indigo for the deeper blue accents, walnut for the brown infill.

The composition

A black ground carries a central ivory medallion drawn in the classical Persian floral idiom. Corner spandrels echo the medallion at lower saturation. Vining stems and small palmettes radiate into the field at controlled scale rather than crowding the centre. The border is layered: a narrow ivory guard, a main band of palmettes in ivory and rust, and a closing guard. The contrast between the deep black ground and the ivory drawing is the visual event. With age the black warms slightly toward charcoal and the ivory pulls toward bone, which softens the contrast into something more antique-looking.

This is a hand-knotted contemporary weaving sold direct from the workshop, in hand-spun wool, on a cotton foundation, knotted by hand at the density the tradition demands. At 8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) the rug carries a primary sitting room with a sectional plus loungers or a six-seater dining setup positioned above the field. A black-ground rug is architectural and asks for considered surroundings. It anchors rooms with pale plaster walls and warm wood floors. It also reads beautifully against deeper teal or olive walls, where the ivory medallion glows at low light. Keep upholstery in solid linen, leather, or undyed cotton.

Conservation

Rotate a half turn twice a year so foot traffic and daylight wear the pile evenly. Vacuum weekly with suction only and the beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with a clean dry cotton cloth at first contact, then a barely damp one if needed. A wool-trained conservator should hand-wash the rug every five years. With this care the carpet runs eighty to a hundred years.
