Rugsville Traditional Overdyed Light Gray Wool Carpet 6' x 9'

Light grey, when it works on a carpet, behaves the way a primed canvas behaves: it lets everything else in the room read as colour. The trick is that grey on a hand-knotted wool surface needs internal variation, or it flattens into the kind of charcoal-printed plane that contemporary tufted rugs produce. The over-dye route gets there by laying a pale grey bath over a finished classical carpet, so that knot density and the previous pattern carry through as faint tonal echoes.

Two to three weavers spent roughly five months at the loom in India to weave the underlying carpet. Cotton foundation, hand-spun wool, traditional asymmetric knot. After cutting, the rug was washed and dried, then immersed in a single bath of pale grey dye and held there until the bath had fully penetrated the pile. The over-dyed rug was sun-dried slowly and finished with a hand shear to bring the pile to a consistent height.

The composition

A pale grey field, almost dove-grey at the edges and slightly warmer toward the centre where the underlying pattern was densest. Faint floral motifs run through the field as soft tonal information visible only at oblique angles or close looking. Borders are absorbed into the bath. The rug behaves as a quiet, textured ground at room scale and rewards close attention with the trace of a classical pattern.
