traditional carpets earned their reputation in the great auction houses of London and New York during the early twentieth century. The weave was tight, the wool lustrous, and the colour register restrained. The piece in front of you was made to those specifications, in the same fibre, on the same kind of vertical loom.
2 weavers shared the loom for 4 months. Around 414,720 hand-tied knots at roughly 120 KPSI, every one set against the warp by feel rather than by template. Hand-spun wool was carded, dyed, and knotted onto cotton warp by 2 weavers sharing a single vertical loom. The dye work was done in small lots so that adjacent skeins carry the small variations of tone that give a hand-knotted carpet its eventual patina. The cartoon was drawn at full scale on graph paper and pinned behind the loom; the lead weaver called colour changes row by row, while the others worked the side fields in synchronisation.
The composition
The composition holds a blue and light blue register against a softer ground. Pattern elements are drawn at a scale that resolves at sitting distance and dissolves into texture from across the room. The wool absorbs light rather than reflecting it, which is why the colour reads as deep on overcast days and warm in lamplight. The borders are restrained, framing the field without crowding it; this is the discipline that separates serious weaving from decorative excess.
What you are buying
This is an entry point to collecting hand-knotted wool work. The piece carries the structural attributes that matter: hand-spun wool, hand-tied knots, cotton foundation, plant-friendly dye chemistry. It will outlast any printed or extruded alternative at the same price by a full generation, and the wool develops character rather than wearing thin.
The piece in a room
At 4' x 6' (122 × 183 cm) the rug holds a primary seating arrangement or a dining table without crowding the architecture. The blue and light blue register pairs with mid-tone wood and warm metals; whitewashed walls push the field forward and darker plaster lets it settle into the architecture. Direct sun is welcome in moderation; UV deepens plant-set dye over time. Allow the front legs of large furniture to rest on the field; the carpet expects to carry weight rather than float free of it.
Conservation
Rotate the rug end-for-end every six months so light and foot traffic age the surface evenly. Vacuum weekly with suction only, beater bar disengaged. Blot any spill immediately with a clean cotton cloth, working from the edge of the spill inward. Hand-wash by a wool-trained conservator every five to seven years. Cared for this way, the rug runs eighty years and outlasts its first owners. Use a natural fibre underlay rather than rubber, which traps humidity against the foundation.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
