Over-dyeing was developed as a way of giving classical carpets a contemporary register without abandoning the drawings that gave them their character. The process layers a single colour bath over a finished hand-knotted rug, sinking the original palette beneath a unifying tone and leaving the pattern as a softer, half-resolved trace. Light blue is the gentlest of the over-dye choices: it cools the field without flattening the underlying composition.
Two to three weavers spent approximately five months at the loom in India before this rug went to the dye bath. Hand-spun wool, cotton foundation, and a traditional all-over floral field were the starting point. After cutting and the first wash, the rug was lowered into a single full-immersion bath of light blue dye and held there until the colour had penetrated through the pile to the foundation. A final shear and a sun drying followed.
The composition
A unified light-blue field with the classical drawing visible underneath as a soft tonal shift rather than a sharp contrast. The original palette of ivory, walnut, and rust shows through the over-dye as warm muted echoes; the blue itself drifts toward grey-blue in the most heavily knotted areas and toward pale sky in the lightest passages. Borders dissolve into the field as part of the over-dye, which is the stylistic point of the technique.
What you are buying
An over-dyed hand-knotted Indian wool carpet at 6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) is a hybrid object: classical knot density and field design carrying a contemporary surface treatment. Comparable pieces through dealers in Europe and the United States retail at three to four lakh once gallery margins are counted in. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating, and the over-dye gains depth as the pile compacts.
The piece in a room
6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) anchors a sitting area, a primary bedroom under the bed, or a smaller dining setting. The light blue cools a warm interior, calms a room with strong wood tones, and reads beautifully against off-white walls or pale grey washes. Pair with linen and oak; avoid putting too many cool blues elsewhere in the room or the rug loses the conversation it was made to start.
Conservation
Rotate twice a year to keep the over-dye fading evenly across the field. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth and cool water; do not use detergent on an over-dyed pile, as alkaline cleaners can lift the bath unevenly. Plan a hand wash by a wool conservator every five years to refresh lustre and balance the blue across the rug.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
