Heriz weaving holds a singular place in the Persian tradition. The district sits at high altitude, the wool runs heavy and lustrous because of the sheep's diet, and the looms are kept upright in stone village houses rather than in court workshops. The drawing follows from those constraints. Geometric, stepped, with bold blocks of saturated colour and a medallion that anchors the composition rather than dissolving into vine work. The pattern in this rug descends directly from the late nineteenth-century Heriz vocabulary.

Four weavers worked the loom for nearly seven months. The pile is hand-spun wool on a cotton warp, knotted by hand row by row using the Persian asymmetric knot. Around 3.5 million knots in total. Madder root supplies the deep red used in the borders and corner spandrels. Indigo provides the dark navy in the medallion accents. The ivory field is undyed wool, washed in soft river water before the loom is strung. Each batch of wool is dyed separately and the small variations between lots produce the slow tonal movement across the field.

The composition

A stepped diamond medallion in deep red and indigo sits at the centre of an ivory ground. Corner spandrels echo the medallion in mirror, with hooked geometric infill in red. The border is layered: a narrow ivory guard, then a main band of palmette repeats in red and indigo, then a second guard in soft cream. The ivory ground will warm with age into a soft bone tone, the red will settle from new-knot brightness into the deeper madder red of antique Heriz, and the indigo will deepen by another half-shade.

What you are buying

Antique Heriz carpets at this scale and condition sell at international auction in the $30,000 to $80,000 range. Restored examples on Western retail floors run higher. This is a contemporary hand-knotted weaving in the same construction tradition, on the same kind of loom, drawn from the same source vocabulary, in hand-spun wool on cotton. The price reflects four weaver-months times three plus material, not the age premium of secondary-market pieces. Hand-knotted Heriz wool appreciates rather than depreciates with use.

The piece in a room

9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) is the canonical drawing-room scale. The rug expects a full sectional or a ten-seater dining table set above the field rather than only on it. The ivory and red palette anchors rooms with cream or chalk walls and warm wood floors. It also reads beautifully against deep teal or forest green walls, where the red borders sing forward and the ivory ground glows at low light.

Conservation

Rotate the rug a half turn each spring and autumn. Vacuum weekly with suction only, beater bar off. Blot spills immediately with a dry cotton cloth, then a barely damp one if needed. A wool-trained conservator should hand-wash every five to seven years. With this care the piece runs eighty to a hundred years.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
