Tibetan stripe rugs grew out of the saddle blankets and floor mats woven by nomads on the high plateau between the Himalayas and the Tibetan grasslands. The technique uses a continuous looped pile, cut after the bar is removed from the loom, which produces the dense even surface that high-altitude weavers needed for both warmth and durability. The pattern language is plain by necessity. Bands of colour run across a long warp, sometimes broken by narrow accent stripes, and the geometry derives from the structure of the loom itself.

Three weavers worked this 8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) piece over roughly six months. The blend is wool for the pile combined with jute laid into the warp at intervals, which gives the rug a textural dryness against the wool softness, a nubbed cross-grain that catches light differently from solid wool. The ivory ground is undyed highland wool. The accent stripes are dyed in small batches of madder and walnut hull. The pile is finished long for plush hand and sheared by hand to even out the surface.

The composition

An ivory and bone field, with widely spaced stripes in soft russet, walnut brown, and oxidised copper. The jute stripes run drier than the wool stripes, which gives the colour a textural shift as well as a tonal one. The palette is multi rather than monochrome, but the values are close enough that the rug still reads as quiet. The stripes are not perfectly parallel; the slight wander is structural, not flawed.

What you are buying

Hand-knotted Tibetan-construction wool-and-jute rugs of this size from London and New York dealers run 1,800 to 3,500 GBP. The rug here is the same construction at the source price. The mixed-fibre body resists matting under heavy traffic better than a pure wool pile, and the rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating. The jute also gives the piece a structural memory; it returns to its set after compression more reliably than wool alone.

The piece in a room

8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) sits well under a six-seater dining table, anchors a primary living room with sofa and pair of chairs, or carries a master suite with a king bed plus a foot bench. The ivory and multi-stripe palette pairs with bleached oak, brass, woven cane, and natural linen. The piece reads quiet from a distance and reveals texture on approach.

Conservation

Rotate the rug end to end every six months. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar lifted; jute fibres shed if scrubbed. Blot spills with a dry cotton cloth, then a damp one, never rub. The mixed fibre tolerates a professional hand wash every six years. Avoid steam cleaning, which can felt the wool and stiffen the jute.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
