The Tibetan tradition is one of the few weaves where the technique itself, rather than the design vocabulary, defines the form. The rod method allows for a longer, looser pile and accepts the high-twist mountain wool that has been the staple fibre of the region for centuries. Contemporary design vocabularies translate easily onto the technique. The piece carried into a contemporary room here is part of that long line.
2 weavers, 4 months of weaving. The cartoon was prepared by a designer working in scale on graph paper, then transferred to the loom one column of knots at a time. The wool was hand-spun on a charkha to keep the lustre that mill-spun yarn loses in the carding. The piece is offered at 5' x 8' (152 × 244 cm) in an ivory and multi register, made in India.
The composition
Ivory and multi dominates the composition. The composition resolves at room scale rather than under close inspection. From across a sitting area the pattern reads as a unified field, and only at conversational distance does the individual motif declare itself. That two-stage reading is what holds a viewer's attention across years of use rather than one season. The pattern photographs differently than it reads in person, which is true of every wool surface and one reason rugs of this calibre are ideally seen in the room they will live in before purchase.
What you are buying
Hand-knotted wool in this density is increasingly rare at this price point. The Indian workshops that still keep the weave alive are running on margins that have not moved in two decades, while the equivalent antique at a Western dealer trades at three to four times this number. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating, the property no machine production can claim.
The piece in a room
5' x 8' (152 × 244 cm) suits a study, a guest bedroom, or a dining nook for four. The rug grounds a small composition without overwhelming it, and the pattern reads from above when the dining chairs are pulled out. Pair with mid-tone walls, simple wooden furniture, and a single piece of art that responds to one of the colours in the field.
Conservation
Rotate end-for-end every six months so the foot traffic and the sunlight age the field evenly. Vacuum weekly on the lowest setting with the beater off. Address spills immediately with a clean white cotton cloth and cool water. Schedule a hand-wash with a textile conservator every five years. The rug is built to outlive several rooms. Direct sunlight on the field is acceptable and even helpful, since UV restores the dye depth that filtered indoor light slowly dulls.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
