About 1.4 million hand-tied knots. Roughly six months of work on a vertical loom for a team of two to three weavers. The Tibetan stripe rug is one of the simplest forms in the hand-knotted catalogue, and that simplicity is precisely the design challenge. With no medallion, no border, and no figurative incident, the rug must hold on its colour relations and the texture of the surface alone. A pattern that does nothing showy survives because it lets the room do the talking.
This 5' x 8' (152 x 244 cm) piece was knotted in handspun wool over a cotton warp. The ivory ground is undyed wool from highland flocks in northern India. The black bands are dyed in iron-mordant walnut, which gives a soft, slightly warm carbon rather than a flat synthetic black. The pile was cut to a moderate height after the rug came off the loom, then sheared a second time by hand to bring the stripes into the same plane.
The composition
The field is ivory with soft black banding running the length of the piece. The bands are not equal in width; the spacing wanders, narrow against wide against narrow, in the manner of hand-drawn lines rather than measured intervals. The ivory ages toward bone over the first two years. The black holds steady, since iron mordant locks pigment to the keratin of the fibre. The whole composition relies on negative space and the slight irregularity that handwork carries into geometry.
What you are buying
Hand-knotted Tibetan stripe rugs in pure wool at this scale carry retail tags of 1,500 to 3,000 USD through Western specialists. The price here reflects direct-from-loom production and a domestic supply chain. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating. The handspun wool develops a slight sheen along the lines of foot traffic, which lifts the contrast between ground and band over the years.
The piece in a room
5' x 8' (152 x 244 cm) sits well in a primary bedroom under a queen bed with the foot off the rug, in a living area beneath a coffee table and pair of armchairs, or as the floor for a study with a desk and reading chair. The ivory and black palette is uncommitted; it pairs with anything from raw oak through painted plaster to dark walnut and brass. The geometry holds at a distance.
Conservation
Rotate the rug end to end every six months. Vacuum weekly on suction with the beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with a clean dry cotton cloth, then a damp one, never rub. Hand wash by a wool conservator every five to seven years. Stored properly, a Tibetan-construction wool rug runs sixty to eighty years in service.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
