Hand-knotted carpets in this tradition begin with a cartoon: a graphed drawing in the scale of the eventual rug, used by the weaver as a knot-by-knot map. Cartoons in this idiom are usually drawn by a senior designer, then handed to the loom for months of execution. The relationship between the original drawing and the finished pile is the relationship between a score and a performance.
This piece was hand-knotted in India by a single weaver. The work ran for six to eight weeks on a vertical loom, with the wool pile tied row by row against a cotton foundation and the comb beating each row down before the next was begun. The pile is sheared after the field is complete, the back washed and dried, and the fringes finished by hand.
The composition
A measured palette holds the field in balance, with the drawing carried by tonal shift rather than high contrast. The colour is layered rather than printed, which is what gives the field its quiet depth. The composition is balanced rather than busy, with the ornament weighted to leave the field room to breathe. The rug works at the scale of the room rather than at the scale of the inspection.
What you are buying
This is the entry point to hand-knotted collecting. The rug is woven on the same kind of loom and to the same craft standards as pieces several times its price; the difference sits in the design lineage rather than in the labour. The piece holds its value through use rather than depreciating.
The piece in a room
At 2' x 3' the piece works as an accent: in front of a fireplace, beside a bed as a single side runner, or under a console table where the geometry registers from above. Pairs with a restrained palette in upholstery and walls so the rug carries the room's colour.
Conservation
Rotate the rug a half turn each spring and autumn so light and traffic age the piece evenly. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged; the bar abrades knot heads on a hand-knotted pile and shortens the life of the rug. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth, never rub, and reach for a wool-trained conservator for any wash rather than a generic carpet cleaner. With this care the piece runs eighty to a hundred years and outlives its first owner.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
