Khaki entered the textile vocabulary in the nineteenth century as a military dye taken from the Persian word for dust, originally an undyed cotton washed with mulberry, tea, or curry to produce a desert-ground colour that resisted showing dirt. Translated to a contemporary Tibetan wool-and-silk carpet, khaki sheds its uniform associations and becomes a quiet earth-tone field, somewhere between olive and dust, with enough warmth to sit comfortably under wood and enough cool to recede in lamplight. The piece reads as a tonal architecture rather than as a designed pattern.
This 6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) carpet was hand-knotted in India by two to three weavers over five months. The pile is a blend of hand-spun wool and bombyx mulberry silk on a cotton foundation, the knots tied with the Tibetan senna loop and the surface cut close enough to let the silk catch grazing light. The wool was dyed in indigo with walnut hull as a secondary mordant; the silk was dyed separately to a cooler khaki and combined with the wool in spinning so the field holds two saturations within a single twist.
The composition
A sustained khaki field that shifts between warm olive and cool dust depending on light. The silk content runs through the surface as a faint metallic sheen, more visible at oblique angles, almost lost when looked at straight on. There is no border, no medallion. The rug holds the floor as a single tonal plane, with the silk and wool combining to produce a colour that pure wool alone could not reach. The dyes will deepen across the carpet's first decade.
What you are buying
Wool-and-silk Tibetan carpets at this scale are sold by Western galleries between four and seven lakh rupees once shipping and dealer markup are factored in. The fibre blend, the senna construction, and the natural-mordant dye chain are identical to that pipeline. The piece is hand-knotted in India and appreciates with use rather than depreciating; the silk content increases the resale ceiling against pure-wool comparables.
The piece in a room
6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) anchors a primary sitting area or a study with a sofa. Khaki pairs with walnut, oak, raw linen, brass, and weathered leather. White and chalk walls let the colour breathe; deep ink-blue walls put it in conversation with its complement. A single graphic photograph reads well above it. Avoid pairing with strongly green or yellow upholstery, which competes for the same tonal space; the rug wants neutrals and warm browns around it.
Conservation
Rotate one hundred eighty degrees annually. Vacuum weekly with suction only and the beater bar disengaged; the silk passages prefer light passes. Blot with a clean cotton cloth promptly. A wool-and-silk specialist should hand-wash the carpet every six years. The piece runs sixty to eighty years on this regimen with the silk lustre sharpening rather than dulling.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
