Two-tone carpets, where a darker field meets a lighter ground in soft tonal gradation rather than in hard linear demarcation, run through the modernist textile vocabulary from Mariano Fortuny in the early twentieth century to contemporary studio practice in north India. A rust-and-beige Tibetan piece at 8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) takes that idea and works it through the lanolin-rich highland yarn, where the fibre's own irregularity does the work of softening the boundary between colour zones. The result is a piece that reads as a tonal study in earth pigment, not as a designed pattern.

Three weavers shared the loom for roughly six and a half months on this carpet. The pile is hand-spun, hand-carded wool on a cotton foundation, the knots tied with the Tibetan senna loop wrapped over an iron rod and cut by knife. Two dye baths were prepared: a madder-and-walnut combination for the rust passages and a milder walnut bath for the beige. The two were woven together in graded transitions, the dyer providing yarn from staged batches as the weavers moved up the loom.

The composition

A warm rust field that softens into a paler beige toward one end of the rug, with the transition handled as a tonal wash rather than as a hard line. The hand-spun wool absorbs the dyes unevenly by design, with the rust-to-beige boundary reading as a graded watercolour rather than as a printed border. The colour will continue to age. The rust passages warm toward terracotta with light exposure, the beige holds steady, and the contrast between zones sharpens slightly across the carpet's first decade.

What you are buying

Two-tone Tibetan carpets at 8' x 10' in wool of this calibre are sold by Western galleries between three and five lakh rupees once shipping and gallery margin are factored in. The senna construction, the hand-spun fibre, and the natural-mordant dye chain are identical to that supply. The piece is hand-knotted in India and appreciates with use rather than depreciating.

The piece in a room

8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) is the working scale for a primary living area or a generous primary bedroom. Place the rust passages toward the seating side of the room and let the beige run toward the windows; the directional gradient becomes a compositional element. The palette pairs with oak, walnut, raw linen, brushed brass, and white plaster walls. Avoid pairing with strongly patterned upholstery; the rug expects to be the principal tonal element.

Conservation

Rotate end-to-end every twelve months so the rust and beige age with even light exposure. Vacuum weekly with suction only, beater bar lifted. Blot with cotton, never rub. Specialist hand-wash every six years preserves the dye depth and the lanolin in the wool. With this regimen, the carpet runs seventy to ninety years.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
