The modern idiom emerged from court workshops where weavers translated illuminated manuscripts into floor compositions. Each line of the cartoon was scored against a wood beam and recited aloud to the loom in a chant that set the rhythm of the knotting. The pattern in front of you draws from that same disciplined lineage.

2 weavers shared the loom for approximately 4 months, tying thousands of Persian-asymmetric knots at approximately 180 knots per square inch against a vertical beam. The pile is New Zealand wool, hand-spun and prepared in small dye lots so that the colour carries the slight irregularity that gives a hand-knotted ground its life.

The composition

The field reads as beige brought up against a quieter ground. The modern drawing carries the irregular grace that only hand-spun yarn produces, with motifs settling at slightly different weights from row to row. The border is restrained where it could be busy, a single guard band rather than the layered frames that turn lesser carpets crowded. Over the next decade the saturated tones will mellow into a softer register and the lighter passages will warm. A vegetable-dyed carpet does not arrive complete. It arrives ready to begin.

What you are buying

At ₹34,999 the rug is an entry point to collecting hand-finished wool work. The fibre, the knot count, and the loom discipline match pieces sold at multiples of this price by Western dealers. Hand-knotted carpets do not depreciate. The pile compresses into a soft sheen, the dye deepens, and the rug is worth more in twenty years than it is today.

The piece in a room

At the size as listed, the rug holds its place as the focal element of a considered room. Pair with quiet upholstery and warm wood so the beige field reads as the work the rest of the composition is arranged around.

Conservation

Keep the rug on a rotation cycle of one half-turn per six months. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar off so the pile is not abraded. Address spills immediately by blotting with cotton, never by rubbing. Conservator hand-wash every five to seven years. Direct sunlight is welcome on vegetable-dyed wool; it restores rather than fades the dye depth.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
