Tibetan weaving uses a knotting structure that no other tradition shares. The yarn is looped around a metal rod laid horizontal across the warp, the entire row is then sliced free with a knife, and the cut tufts are left standing as the pile. The result is a denser, plusher surface than the asymmetric knot can produce, and the geometry of the rod-and-knife method is what gives Tibetan rugs their characteristic visual evenness across the field.

Three weavers shared the loom in India for roughly five months. The pile is hand-spun wool tied against a cotton foundation with the Tibetan loop-and-cut method. The wool was washed in cold water and dyed in small lots from natural pigment, the grey developed across two passes of walnut and a small charge of indigo to lift the warmth toward a cooler tone. The undyed cream highlights were corrected with oak gall to neutralise the underlying yellow.

The composition

An open grey field built across twelve subtly different dye lots, the variation invisible at first glance and obvious in raking light. Faint geometric motifs sit just below the surface in cream and faded silver. There is no central focal point and no formal border. The field reads as a continuous tonal study rather than as a framed composition. The plush Tibetan pile catches light at the cut ends and produces a soft sheen that wool alone usually cannot.

What you are buying

Contemporary Tibetan-knotted wool carpets of this scale and dye standard sell through Western design dealers between ten and twenty-four thousand US dollars depending on attribution. This is a hand-knotted weaving made in India in the same fibre, with the same Tibetan loop-and-cut construction, and with the same vegetable dye programme. A rug in this category appreciates with use rather than depreciating, and the pile darkens by half a step over the first decade.

The piece in a room

6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) is the working scale for a primary bedroom, a small drawing room, or a defined seating circle within a larger space. The grey palette pairs with walnut and bleached oak, with linen and leather, with limewashed plaster, and with art in monochrome or muted colour. The Tibetan pile is dense enough to support furniture without crushing.

Conservation

Quarter-turn the rug every six months so wear and natural light age the surface evenly. Vacuum weekly with suction alone and a soft hand attachment, beater bar always disengaged. Blot spills on contact with a clean cotton cloth and never rub. A wool-trained conservator should hand wash the carpet every five years. With that regimen the rug has a working life of eighty years and beyond.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
