Modern carpet design after the 1950s separated the rug from any one regional tradition. Designers in Paris, Stockholm, and New York drew compositions for the floor the way painters drew on canvas, and the loom adapted. The pattern in this rug sits inside that mid-century reset.
The pile is hand-knotted wool on a cotton foundation. 2 weavers shared the loom across 2-3 months, working at roughly 100 knots per square inch. That gives a finished count of around 345 thousand hand-tied knots. The dyes were prepared in small batches and the wool was lowered into them before being washed in clean water and sun-dried over several days. Every step is done by hand because the result depends on it.
The composition
The pattern is asymmetric by design. There is no centre and no border to anchor the field. The eye moves across the surface rather than fixing on one point, which is the reason the piece sits well under furniture without being eaten by it. The dominant tones run to beige.
What you are buying
This is an honest entry into hand-knotted collecting. Wool, cotton foundation, hand-tied knots, finished by hand. The price reflects the smaller scale of the piece rather than any compromise in the weaving. Used and conserved, it holds and grows in value the way every hand-tied carpet does.
The piece in a room
4' x 6' (122 x 183 cm) carries a study, a moderate sitting area, or a primary bedroom anchored over the bed. The field has presence without dominance. The beige reading carries against off-white walls and cool stone, and it warms a room with darker timber as well.
Conservation
Light handling is the discipline. Suction vacuum, beater bar off. Half-turn rotation each spring and autumn. A professional hand wash on a five-year cycle. Blot spills, work from the edge inward. The rug is built to outlast a domestic life cycle if it is given that quiet attention.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
