Black grounds in carpet design are the most demanding for a wool-and-silk piece, because the silk highlights against a black field must be calibrated to read as illumination rather than as dust on the surface. The Tibet Laka takes that challenge and works a deep black ground with silk highlights along contemporary abstract motifs, the way a painter works metallic pigment over a deep ground. The lineage is Tibetan-tradition wool-and-silk weaving in a contemporary studio commission.

Two to three weavers shared this 6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) loom in India over around five months. The pile is hand-spun Tibetan wool with silk highlights, knotted on a cotton foundation using the Tibetan loop knot. The black ground was achieved with iron-mordanted indigo, prepared in extended cold-water vats. After weaving the rug was sheared close so the silk lustre reads cleanly, washed for lustre, and the selvedges hand-finished.

The composition

A deep black field carries quiet contemporary abstract incidents in silk, with the silk picking up light along the drawn motifs. The black is not flat; under raking light the field carries small tonal variation between dye batches that gives it an internal life. The silk highlights flicker as the viewer moves around the rug; the rug reads as a single black field at distance and resolves into the silk drawing on approach.

What you are buying

Hand-knotted wool-and-silk Tibetan-tradition carpets in a black ground are among the most labour-intensive pieces in the carpet world. Comparable rugs from international design dealers price at three to four times this MSRP. The Tibetan loop knot, the silk content, and the black ground all add to the labour and material cost. The piece appreciates with use as the wool gains lustre and the silk softens.

The piece in a room

6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) anchors a small drawing room or a primary bedroom against a king bed. The deep black palette pairs with cream or ivory plaster walls, with limewashed white, with leather upholstery in cognac or tobacco, with brass lamps. Avoid pairing with strongly competing dark walls; the black ground reads best against a quiet ground.

Conservation

Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn. Vacuum weekly with suction only on a low setting; the silk needs gentle handling. Blot spills immediately with a clean white cotton cloth. Hand-wash by a Tibetan-trained conservator every five years. The black holds its tone with this routine; the silk holds its lustre.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
