Black is the most demanding ground colour a weaver can take on. The dye must penetrate the wool to the core of the fibre or the rug will read as charcoal under direct light, and the natural mordants that produce a true black, primarily iron and logwood, are the most aggressive on the wool itself, requiring careful pH balance to avoid degrading the protein. The Laka design, a contemporary studio composition working with negative space and graphic restraint, asks for that depth of black to function as it should. There is no other colour the design will accept.
This 5' x 8' (152 x 244 cm) carpet was hand-knotted in India by two weavers over four months. The pile is a blend of hand-spun wool and bombyx mulberry silk on a cotton foundation, tied with the Tibetan senna loop and cut close. The wool was dyed in a cold iron-and-logwood bath with extended steeping to drive the dye to the core of the fibre. The silk was left undyed in selected design lines, where its natural cream catches light against the dark ground and gives the composition its graphic register.
The composition
A deep black field with sparse, almost calligraphic cream lines drawn through it in undyed silk. The composition is restrained to the point of austerity. The eye finds the silk passages, follows them, and returns to the black ground as if returning to silence after a phrase of music. The black will continue to age. Iron mordant deepens with oxidation; the silk holds its cream tone and the contrast sharpens rather than fading across the first decade.
What you are buying
Hand-knotted Tibetan carpets in true black wool with bombyx silk accents are uncommon and Western galleries price them between three and five lakh rupees when they reach gallery shows. The senna construction, the iron-mordant dye process, and the silk lining are identical to that supply. The piece is hand-knotted in India and appreciates with use rather than depreciating; black wool with proper dye penetration becomes more valuable as the dye matures.
The piece in a room
5' x 8' (152 x 244 cm) sits cleanly under a primary sofa or as the anchor in a smaller library or study. Black wants pale walls and warm wood. White plaster, limed oak, brushed brass, and a single piece of strong colour somewhere in the room let the carpet hold the floor without dominating it. The rug pairs poorly with patterned upholstery; the design expects to be the only graphic element in the composition.
Conservation
Rotate annually. Vacuum weekly using suction only with the beater bar lifted; the silk passages must not see a beater. Blot promptly with a clean cotton cloth, never rub. A wool-and-silk specialist should hand-wash the piece every five years to preserve the silk lustre and the dye depth. With this care, the carpet runs sixty to eighty years and the black deepens.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
