Tibetan weaving evolved as a high-altitude tradition that valued lanolin-rich, hand-carded mountain wool above all else. The fish motif belongs to the auspicious vocabulary of Buddhist textile work, where the pair of golden fish symbolises freedom and the practical happiness of swimming through obstacles. The drawing here translates that vocabulary into a modern domestic carpet that reads as cultural reference at room scale and as careful drawing on close approach.
Two weavers worked roughly four months on this 6 by 9 ft (183 by 274 cm) hand-knotted piece in India. Hand-spun Tibetan-style wool was tied with the Tibetan loop knot, a technique that uses a metal rod to gauge the loop height before cutting, which is the structural reason the surface holds the consistency a Persian knot finds harder to achieve at the same density. Total labour runs to about eight weaver-months. The fibre carries the natural lanolin of the wool clip, which gives the surface a soft hand and a slight sheen.
The composition
A field that holds the fish motif at calculated intervals, with the drawing organised in repeating pairs across the surface. The colour conversation is built around warm earth tones in the field with deeper accent in the fish drawing. The drawing is generous in scale and reads at room distance as a single chromatic event, with the symbolic vocabulary organising the visual rhythm rather than dominating it.
What you are buying
Hand-knotted Tibetan-tradition rugs at this scale at international gallery dealers list at $5,000 to $13,000. The Rs 2.24 lac MSRP places this rug at fair gallery parity. Tibetan loop-knot construction is more labour-intensive than the equivalent Persian knot at the same density, which is the structural argument for the fibre and labour cost. The piece appreciates with use rather than depreciating.
The piece in a room
6 by 9 ft (183 by 274 cm) anchors a primary bedroom, a small living area with two seats, or a four-seater dining setup. The Tibetan vocabulary works against contemporary architecture as well as traditional, pairing with white plaster walls, walnut, leather, brass, and natural linen. The lanolin-rich wool develops a particular soft sheen with use that machine-spun fibre cannot match.
Conservation
Half-turn each season for even ageing. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with cotton, never rub. Conservator hand-wash every five years. Tibetan wool benefits from less frequent cleaning than other fibres because the lanolin content gives the surface a natural soil resistance.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
