Tibetan rug weaving is the only continuous knotting tradition outside the Persian and Caucasian families. Highland weavers used the cut-loop knot, drawing the wool around a metal rod and slicing it free in a single movement, a technique that allows for a thicker pile and sculpted relief that no other carpet idiom can reproduce. The Big Flower pattern belongs to the contemporary chapter of that lineage, drawn larger and looser than the classical Tibetan archives.

Three weavers worked the loom in India for roughly five months. Hand-carded Tibetan-method wool carries the body of the field, with mulberry silk introduced in the petal centres and along the leaf veins. The cut-loop knot is built across a cotton foundation, with each row beaten down by a wooden comb. The pile was sheared by hand in two passes, the second pass cutting the silk a millimetre lower than the wool to create the relief that catches reflected light.

The composition

Oversized blooms in chocolate, walnut, and warm caramel float across a softly mottled brown ground. Silk catches at the heart of each flower, lifting the petal lines into the light, while the wool body holds the matte field. The brown is not a single colour but a layered range of dye lots that read as the surface of bark or weathered leather. Over years the silk softens into a deeper sheen and the wool grounds itself further.

What you are buying

Hand-knotted Tibetan-method wool and silk carpets at this scale move through American and European galleries in the $7,000 to $15,000 range. The construction is slow, the silk is real, and the design is studio-original rather than reproduced from a printed cartoon. A wool and silk Tibetan rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating, and that property is unique to the cut-loop tradition among contemporary handmade carpets.

The piece in a room

8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) anchors a primary living area, a generous bedroom, or a study with a reading group around a fireplace. The brown palette pairs with leather upholstery in tan or cognac, oak or walnut floors, brass and unpolished bronze fixtures, and walls in chalk, oat, or warm grey. The silk highlights make the rug appear to shift with the time of day, a quality that flat-printed alternatives cannot reproduce.

Conservation

Rotate each season for even traffic and light. Vacuum weekly with suction and the beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with cool water and a clean cotton cloth. The silk components require gentler chemistry than pure wool, so a fibre-trained conservator should handle the year-five hand wash. With this care the rug runs eighty years and outlives its first owner.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
