Recycled sari silk arrived in the carpet vocabulary about twenty years ago, when small studios in northern India began buying surplus saris from the textile trade and unravelling them by hand. The thread that comes out of that process is uneven, mottled, and full of colour memory. It carries the saffron of one wedding, the indigo of another funeral, the rose pink of a Diwali border, and it refuses to lie flat the way new yarn does. A sari silk rug is essentially a textile reincarnation, and that is the appeal.
Two weavers shared the loom on this piece for close to four months. The body was tied knot by knot in handspun recycled sari silk over a cotton warp, with each row beaten down by a heavy iron comb before the next row of colour went in. The pile was sheared by hand at the loom and washed twice in cold water to fix the dye and bring the surface lustre forward. The unpredictability of the source thread means no two metres look identical.
The composition
An open multi field of soft pinks, ochre, sea green, mauve, and chalky cream, broken up by darker accents of plum and old gold. The colours sit in irregular striations rather than a fixed pattern, the way a watercolour wash settles unevenly on heavy paper. Silk catches light from two angles at once, so the rug shifts between matte and reflective as you walk past it. Over a few years the saturation softens by a half step and the surface develops the soft, polished sheen that only silk gives.
What you are buying
Hand-knotted silk pieces in this size and density start at three to four lakh in dealer rooms in Delhi and London when the lineage is comparable. The recycled-yarn approach knocks the material cost down without compromising on the loom time, which is what actually carries the value of a knotted rug. Silk pile compresses less than wool over decades and holds its lustre. The piece appreciates as a textile object rather than wearing out as flooring.
The piece in a room
5' x 7' (152 x 213 cm) is the working scale for a coffee-table island in a flat, the foot of a queen bed, or under a four-seat dining table. The multi palette pairs with mid-century walnut, brushed brass, and warm whites. Avoid placing it under a strong overhead spotlight because silk reads best in raking side light from a window or a low floor lamp.
Conservation
Vacuum gently with the suction-only attachment and the beater bar disengaged. Rotate the rug every six months so wear distributes evenly. Blot any spill immediately with a dry cotton cloth and never use a wet rag on silk. Send the piece to a wool and silk specialist for cleaning every five to seven years rather than attempting it at home.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
