Rugsville Textured Sari Silk Blue Carpet 5' x 8'

A modern rug is built to read as one image rather than as a repeating pattern. The studio tradition the piece descends from runs from the Bauhaus weave room through Eileen Gray's villa rugs and into the present. The composition is its own argument; nothing in it refers outward.

The work took six to seven weeks of loom time under Two. Hand-spun wool, plant-derived dye, charted cartoon. The composition was built up against the warp row by row and washed at finish to bring the colour to its final saturation. The piece carries the irregularities that distinguish hand work from machine reproduction.

The composition

A blue register sets the register of the composition. Around it the design holds quietly, with the secondary tones managed against the principal colour so the rug never falls into competition with itself. The wool takes the dye unevenly by design; small-batch vats produce a soft tonal drift across the field that catches the eye at distance and rewards a slow look. The piece reads as patina from the day it is unrolled. Hand-spun wool tightens into the foundation as the rug settles in, and the colour deepens slowly across the first decade of normal use.

The piece in a room

5' x 8' fits the central living arrangement of a small or medium flat. The rug is sized so the seating sits inside it on the front legs and the conversation circle is held inside its margins. The geometry is read whole from the threshold of the room and the colour resolves into its full saturation under afternoon light.

Care

Vacuum the surface once a week on suction. Both faces of the flatweave are usable, so the piece should be flipped at six-month intervals to even wear. Treat spills with a damp cotton cloth and cool water, blotting outward to inward. Dry-clean the rug every three to four years through a wool-trained cleaner to keep the foundation clear and the dye bright.
