Tabriz is the carpet capital of north-western Persia and the city whose master weavers built the trade with Europe across the late nineteenth century. A Tabriz medallion design typically carries a heavily articulated centre, dense floral spandrels, and a wide border held in a closely calibrated palette. Rust and black is the deeper register of that vocabulary, where madder dye is pushed to the upper saturation and the black accent is built from layered indigo and walnut rather than from a single dye lot.
Three to four weavers worked the vertical loom for around six months. Four weavers tended the vertical loom for the better part of six months. The dye plants were madder for the rust ground, indigo and walnut layered for the black, oak gall for the outline tones, and pomegranate for the lighter cream details. Each colour matured in copper vessels for two to three weeks. After clipping the rug spent four days in sun and a long mineral wash to settle the colour into antique register.
The composition
A rust field carrying a heavily articulated black medallion at the centre, with four spandrel quarters at the corners drawn in the same black with cream filigree. The field between is dense with floral tracery in cream and walnut. The border is a triple band, the principal one in black with a vine and palmette repeat, the two guards in cream and faint madder. The black holds the geometry. The rust holds the warmth. The two values move toward one another over the first decade as the wool relaxes.
What you are buying
Antique Tabriz carpets at 9' x 12' with comparable medallion treatment carry estimates of thirty-five to seventy-five thousand US dollars at international auction. This rug is woven on the same vertical loom, in the same Persian knot, in long-staple wool, with the same plant-dye discipline. At one and a half lac it sits well below the auction comparable and appreciates with use rather than depreciating.
The piece in a room
9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) anchors a primary drawing room. The medallion centres a seating arrangement. The rust holds chalk walls and warms walnut casework. Pairs with brass detail, leather, raw linen, and a single large work above the sofa.
Conservation
Rotate the rug a half turn each spring and autumn. Vacuum weekly, suction only. Blot spills at once with cotton. Hand-wash by a wool conservator every six years. With this care the piece runs ninety years in regular use.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
