Tabriz weaving spent the better part of five centuries refining the long, narrow runner into a piece of architecture in its own right. The format was born for the corridors of Persian courtyards and the long entry passages of merchant houses, and it survives because nothing else organises a hallway with the same authority. The pattern carried in this runner descends from that lineage of repeating medallions and floral guard bands, scaled and proportioned so the eye reads the full nineteen feet as a single intentional gesture rather than a stretch of decoration.

A single weaver shared the loom for close to seven months. Wool was tied row by row in the asymmetric Persian knot against a vertical beam, with the foundation built on cotton warp for stability across the long span. The pile was clipped low to keep the line work crisp and the rust ground readable, and the colour bath was layered in two passes so the black guard bands sit clean against the warm field rather than bleeding into it.

The composition

A rust ground laid the length of the runner, broken at intervals by black medallions and indigo-shadowed vine work that lifts the corners. The rust shifts toward terracotta where the light falls across the pile and toward dried brick where the shadows hold, and the black reads as soft graphite rather than ink. The wool will warm over the next decade and the rust will move closer to old leather. A long Tabriz runner does not arrive finished. It settles into the floor it lives on.

What you are buying

Genuine antique Tabriz runners at this length, from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, surface at international auction in the range of $8,000 to $20,000 when condition holds. This is a new weaving in the same Persian tradition, on the same kind of loom, with the same fibre and the same density of work. The piece appreciates with use rather than depreciating. A runner of this scale almost never comes out of the loom in current production; the format alone justifies the price.

The piece in a room

2'6" x 19' (76 x 579 cm) is the canonical long-corridor scale, sized for an entry hall, an upstairs landing, or the long axis between a primary suite and a study. The rust ground holds against limestone and warm wood floors, and the black medallions give the space a rhythm that matches a row of sconces or framed prints along the wall. Avoid laying it under doors that swing onto the pile.

Conservation

Rotate end for end every spring and autumn so foot traffic and light age the runner evenly along its length. Vacuum weekly with suction only, beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth, never rub. A wool-trained conservator should hand-wash the runner every five to seven years. Cared for this way, the piece will outlast the corridor it was bought for.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
