Moga is the local name for the Persian Tabriz vocabulary as it has been adapted by north Indian workshops over the last hundred years. The pattern is the classical Tabriz medallion-and-corner: a central lozenge surrounded by floral arabesques and bracketed by quarter medallions in the field corners, the whole bordered by a layered band of palmettes and vine. The Tabriz workshops formalised this composition in the sixteenth century and Indian weavers have been refining the same template, often working from the same kind of loom drawings, ever since.
Three weavers shared the loom for about six months. The asymmetric Persian knot was tied row by row by feel against a vertical beam, in wool drawn over a cotton foundation that holds the field flat at the eight by ten scale. Roughly two million knots in total. The dyes were prepared from natural sources and matured in copper vats long enough that the gold ground holds its warm tone rather than turning pale, and the black reads as a true black rather than a charcoal wash.
The composition
A central medallion in deep ivory and rust suspended in a gold field. Black corners step in to balance the eye, with arabesque vine in indigo and copper threading the open space between. The gold is the carrying colour and it does the work the ivory ground does in a Sultanabad: it lifts the design and gives the room its tonal warmth. Under direct light the gold pushes toward honey; in evening light it deepens toward old brass. The wool will polish into a sheen with foot traffic.
What you are buying
An antique Tabriz of this medallion form, with comparable knot density and condition, lists with European dealers in the $8,000 to $25,000 band; nineteenth-century examples reach considerably higher at auction. This is a new weaving in the same Persian tradition, on the same vertical loom, in the same fibre and at the same density. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating, and the price sits well below what equivalent provenance commands in the secondary market.
The piece in a room
8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) sits under a six-to-eight seat dining table or anchors a primary living seating arrangement with a sectional or two facing sofas. The gold ground reads warm against ivory walls, paler stone, and pale oak floors; against walnut or darker timber the black corners pick up the wood and the gold settles deeper. Direct sunlight is welcome here. The vegetable dyes need it to hold their depth.
Conservation
Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn so the field ages evenly. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar off, suction only. Blot spills with clean cotton, never rub. A wool-trained conservator should hand-wash the rug every five years. With this regimen the piece will run eighty to a hundred years and its character will deepen across that time.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
