By the late nineteenth century, the looms of north-west Persia had refined a court style that the rest of the carpet world would spend a hundred years imitating. The medallion compositions credited to that tradition combined the architectural geometry of mosque tile work with floral arabesques drawn from miniature painting, and they set the standard for what a formal carpet ought to look like in a panelled room. The piece in front of you descends from that lineage, reworked by Indian master weavers who learned the same vocabulary of pendants, spandrels, and rosette-filled corners.
Three weavers shared the loom for roughly seven months. Hand-spun wool was tied knot by knot against a vertical cotton warp at a density tight enough to render every cusp of the central medallion. The pile is gold against a graphite black ground, with secondary tones of ivory and rust threading through the spandrels.
The composition
The medallion sits dead centre, a saffron-gold cartouche on a black field that absorbs ambient light and pushes the gold forward. Around it, a vinework of ivory tendrils carries the eye outward to spandrels of muted rust. Black is the hardest ground colour to pull off in wool because it shows every irregularity in the pile. Here it succeeds, the slight tonal shift across the field giving the rug the depth of an old lacquer panel.
What you are buying
Antique north-west Persian medallion carpets at this scale, with comparable density and condition, sit in the dealer market between thirty and seventy thousand dollars when they appear at auction. This is a new weaving in the same tradition, on the same kind of loom, in the same fibre. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating. Few objects you place underfoot improve in value across decades; this one does.
The piece in a room
10' x 14' (305 x 427 cm) is a reception scale. The rug expects a long dining setting for ten to twelve, or a formal seating arrangement with the sofa and chairs floating fully on top. Walls in plaster, oxblood, or deep moss hold the gold. A single overhead pendant lifts the medallion at night.
Conservation
Rotate one hundred and eighty degrees each spring and autumn so that traffic and daylight age the pile evenly. Vacuum weekly with suction only, beater bar disengaged. Blot any spill with a clean cotton cloth working from the outside in. Hand-wash by a wool-trained conservator every five to seven years. Treated this way, the rug runs eight decades and outlives the room it is bought for.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
