Tabriz weaving has been associated with carpet design for so long that the name now functions as a category rather than a place. The defining features are precision drafting, a tight knot, and a layered border that surrounds rather than dominates the field. The Rugsville Tabriz Rust Black follows that grammar at the scale of a serious drawing room carpet, with a saturated rust field and a deep black border anchoring the composition.

Four weavers shared a wide upright loom in northern India for around seven and a half months. The pile is hand-spun wool over a cotton foundation, knotted at the Persian asymmetric structure that Tabriz workshops adopted from court patterns centuries ago. Dyes were drawn from madder root for the rust ground, walnut and oak gall for the black border, and a small quantity of indigo to deepen the floral motifs. Every skein was matured in copper for several weeks before the wool was lowered.

The composition

A continuous rust field carries a dense Herati repeat across its surface, the pattern small enough that it reads as texture from across a room and reveals itself underfoot. The black border is wide and sober, layered with a single ivory guard band, framing the field with the gravity of a charcoal mat around a watercolour. The rust will warm into terracotta over a decade of light, and the black will deepen as the wool oils settle. The carpet does not arrive complete. It arrives ready to start.

What you are buying

A Tabriz pattern carpet of this density and scale, when offered with antique attribution at international auction, sits between four and ten lakh equivalent. This new weaving uses the same fibre, the same density, the same plant dye programme, and is priced against the months of workshop labour rather than against antique scarcity. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating, a property unique to hand-knotted wool at this calibre.

The piece in a room

10' x 14' (305 x 427 cm) is the scale that anchors a long living room with a sectional and a pair of chairs above it, or a formal dining arrangement seating ten to twelve. The rust and black palette suits chalk walls, brass fixtures, and walnut or teak joinery. A leather chesterfield in cognac sits well above the field. Avoid strongly patterned upholstery; the carpet expects to be the graphic centre of the room.

Conservation

Vacuum weekly on suction only, beater bar lifted. Rotate the carpet half a turn each season so window light and footfall distribute evenly across the pile. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth from the outside in, never scrub. Hand wash by a wool trained conservator every five to seven years. With these habits the carpet runs eighty to a hundred years and outlives its first owners comfortably.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
