About 2.6 million hand tied knots. Roughly six months of work for three weavers on a single upright loom. The Sultanabad pattern asks for that scale of investment because the open ground and generous vine work only succeed when each knot sits cleanly against its neighbour and the dye lots carry across the field without visible breaks. Anything less and the design becomes a flat copy of itself.
The foundation is cotton warp and weft, the pile is hand-spun wool, the knot a Persian asymmetric tied against a vertical beam at a measured cadence row by row. Madder root, indigo, walnut hull, and oak gall carried the palette, each colour matured in copper for two to three weeks before the wool was lowered into the bath. The dye programme follows the practice that the Sultanabad workshops in western Iran developed in the late nineteenth century for the western drawing room market.
The composition
A bone field carries an open floral vine in soft rust, indigo, and deeper walnut. The vine work is loose and confident, with negative space between the motifs as deliberate as the drawing itself. The border is restrained, a single deeper guard band framing the field rather than crowding it. Plant dye gives the bone a faint warmth that pigment cannot reproduce, and the colour will continue to move slowly over the years, with the rust softening into terracotta and the indigos deepening as surface oils settle.
What you are buying
Antique Sultanabads at this scale and condition sell at international auction for fifteen to forty lakh equivalent when they appear at all. This is a new weaving in the same tradition, on the same kind of loom, in the same fibre, in the same density, with the same dye lineage. The price reflects six months of skilled labour rather than antique scarcity. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating, which is not a property of any other object you place on a floor.
The piece in a room
9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) is the canonical drawing room scale, sized for a sectional sofa and a low coffee table or a dining arrangement seating ten to twelve as the work the room is built around. Chalk and warm putty walls hold the palette. Brass and aged bronze read well above the field, and walnut or teak joinery sits comfortably with the warmer accents in the vine work.
Conservation
Rotate the carpet a half turn each spring and autumn so window light and traffic age the surface evenly. Vacuum weekly on suction only, beater bar lifted. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth, never rub. Hand wash by a wool trained conservator every five to seven years. With these habits the carpet runs a hundred years and outlives its first owners.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
