Sultanabad as a design language opened the field. Earlier Persian classical carpets had filled every square centimetre of ground with incident. The Sultanabad weavers loosened the palmette repeat, dropped the dense lattice, and let the field breathe so the eye could rest between motifs. That breathing was the innovation that made the carpets readable in Western drawing rooms, and it is the discipline this rug holds to.
Four weavers shared the vertical loom for close to six months. The pile is hand-spun New Zealand wool on a cotton foundation, tied row by row in Persian asymmetric knots. Dye lots were prepared from madder root, indigo, walnut hull, and oak gall, each one matured in copper vessels for two to three weeks before the wool was lowered. After clipping, the rug spent four days in sun and a long bath in mineral solution that mellowed the saturation toward antique register.
The composition
An open ivory ground holding palmette and vine in measured intervals. The principal accents are a faded madder rust and an indigo so deep it reads charcoal in shadow. The border is a single deep guard band, restrained, narrow. The field carries faint horizontal abrash from neighbouring dye lots sitting side by side, the natural fingerprint of plant-dye work. Over the first decade the rust will lighten and the indigo will warm, the slow exchange the lineage was built to perform.
What you are buying
Period Sultanabad carpets from 1890 to 1920 in this scale and condition carry estimates of forty to ninety thousand US dollars at Christie's, Sotheby's, and the European rug specialists when they appear. This rug is woven on the same loom architecture, in the same fibre, to the same density. At a fraction of the auction comparable it appreciates with use rather than depreciating.
The piece in a room
9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) is the canonical drawing-room scale. The composition reads at distance as a warm wash and resolves into incident on approach. The rug pairs with walnut, brass, vellum lampshades, oxblood leather, and a single large painting rather than a wall of small ones. Mid-tone plaster walls hold the saturation steady.
Conservation
Half-turn the rug each spring and autumn. Vacuum weekly, suction only. Blot spills at once with clean cotton, never rub. Hand-wash by a trained wool conservator every six years. Cared for this way the piece runs ninety years in regular use and outlives its first owners.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
