A black and ivory rug is a difficult composition to bring off because the contrast is absolute. There is no halfway between deep charcoal and undyed wool, which means the drawing has to carry the whole weight of the design. The Sultanabad floral works in this palette because the original pattern was built for tonal rather than chromatic interest, and translating it into black on ivory clarifies the geometry rather than flattening it.
This 10' x 14' (305 x 427 cm) field was tied by three to four weavers across roughly seven months on a vertical loom. The pile is hand-spun wool, drawn for its longer staple and its ability to hold deep dye without losing the slight irregularity that gives older wool its patina. The foundation is cotton, warped on a vertical beam and tensioned by hand. Each knot was set by feel against the warp using the Persian asymmetric tie and combed down with a metal beater.
The composition
An ivory ground carries scrolling vine work, palmettes, and small blossoms in deep charcoal black with occasional accents of soft grey. The drawing breathes; there is open ivory between every motif rather than a dense allover repeat. Black on ivory is a graphic combination that reads from across a room and reveals fine drawing on approach. The hand-spun wool gives both colours a faint heather, so neither is flat.
What you are buying
Comparable Sultanabad and Ziegler weavings at this scale and density trade through Western dealers in the range of three to six lakh when they carry a workshop attribution. The MSRP set against this rug acknowledges that comparable. The asked price is well below it because the carpet is sold direct from the loom. Hand-knotted wool on a cotton foundation appreciates with use rather than depreciating, and a black-and-ivory composition is among the more sought-after Sultanabad palettes for contemporary interiors.
The piece in a room
10' x 14' (305 x 427 cm) is the working scale for a generous formal living or dining room. The black-and-ivory palette pairs with almost any wall colour, with walnut, oak, brushed steel, brass, and restrained modern furniture. The carpet sits especially well in rooms with strong architectural detail because the high-contrast drawing competes with neither colour nor pattern in the surrounding fabric. Mid-tone or cream walls hold the field best.
Conservation
Rotate the rug a half turn each spring and autumn to balance light exposure and foot traffic. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar off and only the suction nozzle in contact with the pile. Blot any spill with a clean dry cotton cloth, never rub. Schedule a wool hand-wash by a trained conservator every five years. Treated this way the carpet runs eighty years and longer and develops the soft patina that older Sultanabad weavings are valued for.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
