New Zealand wool is the only fibre that takes vegetable dye to the saturation a classical Sultanabad design needs without losing the slight tonal irregularity that gives a hand-knotted rug its patina. The Sultanabad pattern itself was developed in central Persia in the nineteenth century, when European trading houses commissioned village weavers to scale up the dense floral repeats into open, repeating fields built around a quiet medallion. This rug carries that lineage forward in fibre and palette.

Three weavers in India shared the loom for roughly six months. Around 1.7 million Persian-asymmetric knots were tied against a vertical beam, the wool drawn from a thirteen-micron staple chosen for its even uptake of madder, indigo, oak gall, and walnut hull. Each dye bath was matured for two to three weeks in copper vats before the skein was lowered, and every shade in the rug was prepared from plant matter.

The composition

An open ivory field carries an all-over vine in soft madder and faded indigo. There is no central medallion in the conventional sense, only a quiet thickening of the pattern toward the centre. The border is a single deep guard rather than the layered borders that crowd lesser pieces. The colour will continue to shift for a decade. The ivory warms into bone, the madder lightens toward terracotta, and the indigo deepens. A vegetable-dyed Sultanabad arrives ready to start, not complete.

What you are buying

Period Sultanabads with 1900 to 1920 attribution and honest condition trade at Christie's, Sotheby's, and Rippon Boswell between thirty and sixty thousand dollars when they appear at all. This is a new weaving in the same tradition, on the same kind of loom, to the same density, in the same fibre. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating.

The piece in a room

8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) is the canonical living-room scale, anchoring a sectional sofa with the front feet on the rug or sitting beneath an eight-seater dining table without crowding the chairs. Mid-tone walls hold the saturation, and direct sunlight refreshes the dyes that interior light slowly washes out.

Conservation

Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn so light and traffic age the wool evenly. Vacuum weekly with suction only and the beater bar off. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth at once. A wool-trained conservator should hand-wash the rug every five years. With this care, the piece runs eighty to a hundred years and outlives its first owners.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
