The Sultanabad pattern was developed in central Persia in the 1800s as a deliberate softening of the dense classical floral repeats that preceded it. The brief was to open the field, lighten the colour, and let the wool itself become as much of the composition as the drawing. The result is the rug type that defined the early twentieth century drawing room across both London and New York and that still anchors collector demand today.

This 6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) classic Sultanabad was hand-knotted in India by two to three weavers across roughly five months. The wool is hand-spun, the dyes are vegetable, and the colour was developed across multiple rinses to set saturation without locking the fibre into a flat surface. Madder, indigo, oak gall, and walnut hull went into the recipe, each one matured for two to three weeks in copper vats before the wool was lowered.

The composition

An ivory ground softened by an underlying wash of warm oatmeal. Vine work in faded indigo running corner to corner with the irregular grace that only plant dye produces. Soft rust palmettes punctuate the field at a half-drop interval. The border is restrained, a single guard band in deeper indigo. A vegetable-dyed Sultanabad does not arrive complete. It arrives ready to start ageing, and the next ten years will warm the ivory toward bone.

What you are buying

Antique Sultanabads of this size and condition trade at Christie's, Sotheby's, and Rippon Boswell in the $20,000 to $60,000 band when they appear, and they appear less every year. This is a new weaving in the same lineage, on the same kind of loom, in the same vegetable-dyed hand-spun wool. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating. There is no other object on a floor with that property at any price.

The piece in a room

6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) is the working scale for a sitting room with a four-seat sofa and a coffee table, or a study with a partner desk and reading chair. The soft palette pairs with limewashed walls, with bleached oak floors, and with linen and cotton upholstery in stone or sage. Direct daylight is helpful; UV restores depth that interior lighting slowly washes out.

Conservation

Rotate the carpet a half turn each spring and autumn so the dye ages evenly across the field under light. Vacuum weekly, suction only, beater bar fully disengaged. Blot any spill with clean cotton, never rub. Hand wash by a wool-trained conservator every five years. With this care the rug will run a hundred years and pass cleanly to its next owner.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
