The Sultanabad classic is the workshop pattern that established what a Persian rug looked like in the western imagination. An open ground, a measured all-over floral repeat, a restrained border, and a palette built on madder reds, indigo blues, and warm undyed cream. The design was developed in central Iran in the 1880s for an export market that wanted Persian without baroque, and it has remained one of the most copied and most respected compositions in the field. This rug is a working contemporary version of that lineage.
The 10' x 14' (305 x 427 cm) field was tied by three to four weavers across roughly seven months. The pile is New Zealand wool, hand-spun, chosen for its longer staple and its ability to take vegetable dye to deep saturation. The dyes were prepared from madder root, indigo, oak gall, and walnut hull, each colour matured for several weeks in copper vats before the wool was dipped. The foundation is cotton, warped vertically and tensioned by hand.
The composition
An ivory and soft cream ground carries an all-over floral repeat in faded brick red, deep indigo, and old gold. There is no central medallion; the design is a continuous field that lets the eye settle anywhere. The border is a single broad guard band in indigo. Vegetable-dyed wool ages in plain sight. Over the next decade the reds will warm, the blues will deepen, and the cream will warm into wheat.
What you are buying
Comparable antique Sultanabads of this scale and palette sell through the major Western houses at attribution prices in the thirty to sixty thousand US dollar range. Modern workshop weavings in the same tradition trade through Western dealers in the four to seven lakh range. This piece is offered direct from the loom at a fraction of either comparable. Hand-knotted vegetable-dyed wool on cotton appreciates with use rather than depreciating because every input is a finite material.
The piece in a room
10' x 14' (305 x 427 cm) is the working scale for a generous primary drawing room or a long dining setting. The cream and indigo palette is among the most flexible the tradition produces. The piece pairs with walnut, oak, brass, restrained period furniture, and either oil painting or considered modern work. Mid-tone walls hold the saturation best; pure white walls can wash the colour slightly.
Conservation
Vacuum weekly with the beater bar off and suction only. Rotate the piece a half turn each spring and autumn so traffic and sunlight age it evenly. Blot any spill with a dry cotton cloth, never rub. Schedule a hand-wash by a wool-trained conservator every five years. Treated this way the carpet runs eighty to a hundred years and gains the soft patina older Sultanabads are prized for.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
