By the late nineteenth century, the looms of Sultanabad in central Persia had reshaped the European drawing room. Western buyers wanted the dense classical repeats softened into broader, more architectural fields, and the workshops obliged with a vocabulary of palmettes and trailing vines that have anchored serious interiors ever since. The carpet in front of you reads from that same playbook, with a burgundy ground that pulls warmth out of every adjacent surface and gold-yellow palmettes that catch lamplight along the spine of the field.

Four weavers shared the loom for close to seven months. The pile is hand-spun wool, dyed in small batches before mounting so the saturation varies subtly across the field the way old Sultanabads do. The foundation is cotton, the knotting Persian asymmetric, and the borders carry a layered ivory guard band that frames the burgundy without enclosing it.

The composition

Burgundy reads almost claret in the centre and softens toward terracotta near the corners. Gold palmettes float on indigo vine work that runs from medallion to border without a single rigid axis. The weavers worked the corner resolutions by eye rather than by template, which is why the symmetry never feels mechanical. Over the next decade the burgundy will lighten by a half-tone, the gold will warm to amber, and the cream guard band will settle into bone.

What you are buying

Period Sultanabads of comparable scale and condition appear at Rippon Boswell and Christie's in the twenty-five to forty-five thousand dollar range when they surface at all. This is a freshly woven piece in the same tradition, on the same loom geometry, in the same wool tier. A carpet of this construction appreciates with use rather than depreciating, and that property is unique among objects placed on a floor.

The piece in a room

10' x 14' (305 x 427 cm) is the canonical scale for a long dining hall or a generous open-plan living area in India. The burgundy holds against walnut floors and carries a sectional sofa or a twelve-seat dining table without disappearing under the furniture. Mid-tone walls in clay, taupe, or warm grey let the gold palmettes register; pure white walls thin out the colour and should be avoided.

Conservation

Rotate the carpet a half turn each spring and autumn so foot traffic and natural light age the wool evenly. Vacuum once a week with the beater bar disengaged. Blot any spill with a clean cotton cloth, never rub. A wool-trained conservator should hand-wash the piece every five to seven years. Cared for this way, the carpet will run eighty to a hundred years.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
